Public building Design
With the social background that electronic media are gradually replacing paper media, newsstands have become people's past memory. This project is a public building located in Xiamen, China, a renovated and upgraded newsstand.
The new design is to summarise and classify the original newsstand's various functions, divided and distributed in densely populated bases. The new functions include four small spaces, which were a street convenience store, a small book bar, a scrapbook labyrinth and a memory gallery, of which the corresponding design inspirations also come from the four elements of the grid, suspension, reel and curve in the original newsstand shape.
As design elements, the street convenience store formed a large utility cabinet of iron grids, combining its functionality and form factor. The small book bar is a space for reading and selling books and newspapers designed with the inspiration of hanging. In order to continue the habit of users making scrapbooks, I devised the scrapbook labyrinth to make scrapbooks and exhibition, which was inspired by the Chinese traditional scrolls. The memory gallery is designed in curves for users to browse the photos, documentation and photos.
